At the Threshold: Congregations and Their Buildings in the Time of COVID-19

Today we are releasing “At the Threshold: Congregations and Their Buildings in the Time of COVID-19,” a set of recommendations for Maine’s churches as they begin discerning how and when to re-open their buildings for in-person worship services.  This document was created in consultation with Maine’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention and is an adaptation of “Returning to Church,” a set of guidelines released in March by the Wisconsin Council of Churches.  You will find denomination-specific resources about re-opening listed at the end of our recommendations and we want to emphasize that clergy and congregations should always look to their denomination’s leadership as the primary source for directives and guidance.

We encourage you to use the last two weeks in May as a time of careful study and prayerful deliberation so that when the time comes here in Maine that restrictions begin to be lifted, you are prepared to communicate clearly with your members about what will be happening in your building, what won’t be happening, and why.
