MCC CONVENES WEBINAR FOR CHURCH-BASED SOCIAL SERVICES

On Tuesday, March 24, MCC hosted an online meeting for clergy and lay leaders of churches in Maine who run programs like food and essentials pantries, clothing closets, shelters, soup kitchens and community meals, all of whom are facing significant challenges in continuing to operate these vitally important services during the COVID-19 crisis.

his year’s Convocation will invite faith leaders and faith communities to be part of a transformative response to the current climate crisis. These times require spiritually grounded leaders who embrace an active, embodied practice of hope — leaders who dismiss the paths of denial and despair and choose to live in a state of engagement. This kind of hope is different from passive optimism — it is a way of being in the world, rooted in faith, expressed in action, and sustained by contemplative practice.

Currently, federal funding helps ensure that more than 30,000 Maine households have a safe and affordable place to call home. But the demand for affordable homes in Maine far exceeds the supply. Avesta Housing and other housing organizations around the state are working to change that.

In Solidarity with the Jewish Community

The Maine Council of Churches joins religious and ethnic communities standing up against the growing anti-semitic outrages that have been occurring at an alarming rate.The American Jewish Committee, the nation’s oldest human rights organization, has asked the American Jewish community to display stickers on their websites read that read “#Jewish and Proud.” The AJC has also asked those non-Jews who support the national protest against anti-semitism to display a similar “Ally” sticker.
